Review: Half a king by Joe Abercrombie

“You may need two hands to fight someone, but only one to stab them in the back.”

Half a king follows a young man called Yarvi. He has a crippled hand and is the son of the king of Gettland. Because he can’t fight with one hand, he has trained his mind and wants to become a minister. But then Yarvi receives a message that his father and brother are killed by Grom-Gil-Gorm, the king of Vansterland and he is the new rightful king of the throne. A throne he had never wanted. But there are others who want to take the throne from him and he finds himself caught in a wild adventure. Yarvi gets help from a strange group of outcasts, just like he is, and together they take on the mission to make sure the rightful king of Gettland will be the one sitting on the throne.

I have never read a book by Joe Abercrombie before, but from now on he is one of my favourite Authors! So I have got some reading to do after this. His writingstyle is just amazing, his characters complicated and wonderful and his humour spot on.

““What is the world coming to when an honest man cannot burn corpses without suspicion?” asked Nothing.”

He makes a traditional plot into a beautiful and original story. One I totally loved! It is action packed from the first pages until the very end. It contains some plot twists that I totally did not see coming. The story and the things that are happening in the book are just so different than I had expected. And the ending was pure perfection.

I really grew to the main character Yarvi. He is a man with flaws who makes a lot of mistakes, but you can’t stop liking him because he is such an amazing person who is only trying to do any good. Although he is not that strong physically, he is a genius mentally, he will always find a way and will never give up. He transforms from a boy in the beginning to a very strong man in the end.

The side characters were just as amazing as Yarvi. There were some very loveable characters, they were so kind and helpful. Some characters that were more than I thought at first. Some very strong female characters, which I totally liked. And my favourite of them Nothing. He is just a very crazy man, but I loved him! He is so funny, has some crazy skills and has a very interesting personality.

Without these amazing characters the book wouldn’t have been as good as it was. But that is not the case, this book was perfect. One of my favourites. I can’t wait to pick up another book of Joe Abercrombie.

“If life has taught me one thing, it’s that there are no villains. Only people, doing their best.”
